General Scope and Summary

SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, integrative thinker for an important role on the Digital Enterprise Capabilities team. The Associate Director, Cloud Platforms & Infrastructure’s role is to plan, organize, and manage Sage’s IT infrastructure to ensure the stable operation of the organization’s IT infrastructure. This includes developing, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing key functional areas, network infrastructure, server infrastructure, data communications, and telecommunications systems. This individual will schedule and direct activities with Sage’s IT MSPs to resolve hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion. The AD will interface with business managers, applications specialists, system users, and vendor contacts as needed, and is responsible for defining technical standards and all infrastructure-related aspects of application and network services planning and measurement. The AD makes sure that the department maintains compliance with departmental SOPs and company guidelines, and that all legal requirements for GxP and SOX compliance are met. This individual is also responsible for assisting in all aspects of the IT operational infrastructure, such as budget planning, cost and asset management, staffing management, maintenance contract management, and disaster recovery.

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning (35%):

  • Design and implement short- and long-term strategic plans to ensure infrastructure capacity meets existing and future requirements.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies, operational standards, and procedures, including those for performance, backup, staffing, security, infrastructure administration, project management, and validation.

  • Provide project leadership in planning, design, implementation, and validation for infrastructure projects and support of corporate security requirements.

  • Participate in the development of IT strategies in collaboration with the IT Leadership Team.

  • Conduct research and make recommendations on products, services, protocols, and standards in support of all infrastructure procurement and development efforts.

  • Assist with the operational budget, including maintenance contracts and supply ordering.

  • Assist with the corporate IS Architecture and Disaster Recovery planning and implementation management.

Acquisition & Deployment (35%):

  • Prepare RFPs, bid proposals, contracts, scope of work reports, and other documentation for infrastructure projects and associated efforts.

  • Negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure infrastructure-specific products and services.

  • Assist with the planning and deployment of infrastructure security measures.

Operational Management (30%):

  • Manage all aspects of on-premise and cloud-based data center operations, including environmental and security systems, resource and performance management systems, and staff coverage assignment.

  • Manage and set priorities for the design, maintenance, development, and evaluation of all infrastructure systems, including LANs, WANs, Internet, intranet, security, wireless implementations, and so on.

  • Conduct feasibility studies for various upgrade projects, improvements, and other conversions.

  • Define hardware and software standards in conjunction with owners and stakeholders.

  • Test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports; develop strategies for maintaining network infrastructure.

  • Manage operational costs; conduct near- and long-term financial forecasts for expanded functionality/user base.

  • Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with the IT Leadership Team, decision-makers, stakeholders, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent infrastructure activities.

  • Practice IT asset management, including maintenance of component inventory and related documentation.

  • Direct and administrate a contingent of network analysts and technicians, and where necessary, conduct performance reviews and corrective action.

  • Monitor and control the performance and status of corporate hardware and software systems; supervise delivery of end-user support services; provide reporting metrics on service delivery and operational availability; recommend upgrades/enhancements as needed.

  • Manage the diagnosis and repair of complex problems and factors effecting system security, system performance, and reliability.

  • Maintain data security and integrity, thorough monitored backups, database management, security management, and application auditing.

  • Monitor and respond to hardware and software alarms using appropriate problem determination tools. Establish procedures for service call placement and escalation.

  • Supervise, direct, and instruct technical specialists, administrators, and operations and production management personnel as needed.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Must have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, and the ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in computer science or related technical field.

  • 6+ years of experience in a systems administration and end-user support environment.

  • 3+ years of experience with AWS Cloud Administration/Operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred.

  • 4+ years of experience in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry and working as an engineer at an MSP.

  • Ability to get work done through MSPs.

  • Clear commitment to implementing supportable and sustainable IT infrastructure solutions.

  • Exceptional knowledge of service and application delivery, as well as successful service level agreement accomplishments.

  • Experience in interpreting the applicability of local and federal laws/regulations to company operations.

  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment and make sound decisions in emergency situations.

  • High degree of technical expertise and extensive knowledge of computer operating systems, server operating systems, computer security systems, and procedures.

  • Technically proficient with IP Networking, Network hardware, and Network security systems.

  • Provides management and technical assistance to service providers and contractors.

  • Highly self-motivated and directed with strong customer service orientation.

  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.

  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
